Learning a foreign language takes time and work. However, it does not have to be difficult and expensive. An important key to acquiring a new language is to make it a constant and active part of one's daily life through immersion and real-life practice. The following tips aim at helping language learners successfully integrate a foreign language into their everyday routine.

Immerse Through Language-Based Activities

Set out a specific amount of time everyday to immerse in the target language. It can be as little as fifteen minutes. Read an article, write an email, listen to a CD, or play a game in the target language. The Internet is a good place for finding learning materials. Also explore resources at local libraries and bookstores.

Fifteen minutes may seem short but the goal here is consistency. By keeping in touch with the target language on a daily basis, the learner builds connection and commitment to it. In other words, the language stops being an abstract and passive goal and starts to become familiar, real, and attainable.

Sharpen Language Skills Through Exchanges

Anglophone language learners have a huge advantage: many people in the world want to learn English. Post a notice at the local library, college campus or online. Finding language partners online has become increasingly popular over the past decade. There exists a number of websites that match language learners who live within certain proximity of one another.

Speaking and listening frequently get cited as the two most challenging aspects of learning a language. A language exchange not only provides valuable real life practices but also makes learning social and fun. Even if language partners cannot meet in person, a phone conversation or an email exchange is a great start.

Find Real-Life Opportunities to Put Target Language to Use

Visit local establishments where the target language might be used, such as culture centers, language schools, ethnic stores, museums etc. These organizations often serve as a sort of connecting point for people with similar interest or attachment to the target language and culture. Try to get involved in these organizations, whether by attending their events, becoming a member, or offering one's volunteer services.

Remember to be positive, persistent, and realistic with learning goals. Set small goals and tailor the learning process to one's needs and interests.
